Woman’s Press Club of Indiana celebrated its contest winners and scholarship recipients at its annual banquet May 6 in Indianapolis.
“Our contest drew 47 entries among 14 entrants, and 24 of those won first place,” said Gena Asher, WPCI contest director. “It speaks well of our entrants’ work that nearly half scored top prizes.”
The first-place entries will compete with affiliates’ work from around the nation it the National Federation of Press Women’s competition. Those prizes will be announced at the NFPW conference June 22-24 in Cincinnati.
“Seven of our entrants have been notified that they are winners in the NFPW contest,” Asher said, “but we will have to wait until the June 24 contest announcements to find out where they placed.”
Several winners were on hand to receive their certificates and honors. Viv Sade, Kassie Ritman, Natalie Hoefer, Diane Moore, Cathy Shouse, Elizabeth Granger and Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp collected prizes in categories covering many communication areas, including reporting and writing; books; photography; columns; and special articles.
Granger won the Honeycomb Award, the club’s certificate that honors the entrant with the most awards.
Granger also won the Louise Eleanor Ross Kleinhenz scholarship, which is awarded to communicators who wish to improve their skills. Granger said she plans to use the $500 award to establish a website for her travel writing freelance business.
Tammy Tilley received the Elizabeth and Fred Granger Travel Writing Scholarship award, also $500, in recognition of her writing for outlets such as the Lagrange County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Three WPCI members received the Kate Milner Rabb award, the club’s highest honor, for their contributions as contest directors. They are: Gena Asher, who directs the professional contest; Bridget Carson, who directs the Prison Writing Program; and Elizabeth Granger, who directs the high school contest.
Members observing significant anniversaries included Amy Smelser, five years; Mary Ann Barothy, 15 years; Angie Priest, 15 years; Gena Asher, 35 years; and Julie Slaymaker, 50 years.
During its business meeting prior to the banquet, the club installed officers. They are Viv Sade, president; Tara Puckey, vice president; Becky Killian, secretary; and Julie Slaymaker, treasurer.
