Longtime member and former WPCi president Elizabeth “Ann” Allen, 80, of Akron, Indiana, died Sept. 10, 2015, at her residence.
Editor of the former Akron/Mentone News, Allen worked for many years as a correspondent for the Rochester Sentinel and Farm World. She also served as marketing director for the former Akron Exchange State Bank. She wrote several books, including Born Again…but still wet behind the ears, Someone has to Pop the Corn, From Ties to Technology: A History of Pike Lumber Company, and The History of the Akron United Methodist Church, in addition to a number of articles for the state and national publications.
Allen won many awards for her reporting from organizations, such as WPCi and National Federation of Press Women. A historian at heart, Allen was instrumental in assembling materials and articles during the club’s 100th anniversary celebration in 2013.
Allen also was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 2017.
Allen was her hometown’s biggest fan. She was recognized in 2014 for her years of “dedicated and responsible journalism” by the town of Akron, Ind., where she once published a newspaper and continued to chronicle the town in a column for the Rochester Sentinel until her death.
Shortly before her death, Allen was featured in a 2015 news spot on former Fox 28 broadcast channel in Elkhart that looked at the small town and history of Akron.
